The Seduction of Dr. Fuji Pt. 1

Description

Well, this is the first piece I've done in a very long time, that's for sure lel. I'm pretty happy with it, tho I think Giovanni could have gone better. This was my first time drawing both Dr. Fuji and Giovanni, so they're both pretty alright taking that into account.

I am thinking of doing a several part series (at least three, but probably more) of artwork featuring the story of Dr. Fuji in the brief span of time between his meeting with Giovanni and the events we see in The Uncut Story of the Origin of Mewtwo.

This is the first in that series, of course. It's basically Giovanni approaching Fuji with his proposition. Fuji obviously seems to have some reservations about Giovanni, but in the end his desire to bring Amber back trumps any such feelings (hence Giovanni holding a photograph of Amber--which was supposed to be--and previously was-- in the black ribbonned portrait on the shelf below the hourglass--the hourglass explains itself).

He's holding it up to Fuji, who looks down in its direction with his eyes closed, expressing his conflicted feelings. The curtains behind him which partially shroud the cloning vial (Amber's picture being over it being no coincidence, btw ;3) symbolize Giovanni not telling Fuji the whole truth about his intentions. The silhouette of Mew and the Mew fossil above Giovanni represent what's on his mind, and his stance is somewhat seductive to convey deceitfulness, basically. So, figurative seduction.

The butterfly/cocoon/caterpillar/leaf portraits and the black vase with black roses are a bit of borrowed symbolism, from Revolutionary Girl Utena. Basically, the portraits show the evolution of egg into butterfly, but if read in descending order, it is de-evolution (and that is how it is to be read--regression, going back to the past). The black roses are preserved roses, and with this I basically applied another series' character's personal symbolism to Fuji's story--Tokiko (Revolutionary Girl Utena) hated to see flowers die, so she preserved them and her preserved roses turned black. I thought that would apply to Fuji's preserving Amber's consciousness and doing all possible to keep it from dying (again), and if possible to extend its life forever (as Tokiko wanted to do for her brother).

The tape and the key on Fuji's desk both represent the same thing. The tape is Miyamoto's recording of Mew, and the key is the key Mrs. Fuji left on the fable along with the farewell letter when she left Dr. Fuji. I chose Miyamoto's (Jessie's mum) tape to be present in this scene because her daughter (Jessie) was the main reason she wanted to catch Mew, and it was her daughter she thought of when she finally did find Mew, and Fuji's key to creating life is Mew (and the tape has the only known recording of Mew, so the tape is the key)  and the one he thinks of in his pursuit of this is Amber.

The shoe floating in the cloning vial thing belongs to Dr. Fuji, and symbolizes Dr. Fuji. It is submersed in water (read: drowning, symbolizing his sorrow over losing Amber) but it is that water (his sorrow) which will allow him to create life (Mewtwo).

So yeah. :3
